Radcliffe is today part of the Metropolitan Borough of Bury, to the north of Manchester and taking its name from the Old English meaning of “red cliff or bank†which was to be found on the side of the River Irwell on which Radcliffe now stands. Mentioned in the Domesday Book the town of Radcliffe still bears some of the architecture of the time in the form of the Radcliffe Tower, a scheduled ancient monument, which is today to be found close to Radcliffe Parish Church. The location of the tower itself dating back to around 1280 although it is believed that the present tower was rebuilt by James de Radcliffe in 1403.
