Quothquan is an ancient village in south Lanark in Scotland in the parish of Libberton 2 miles south from Libberton village on the eastern side of the River Clyde, 3 km north-west from Biggar, 6km south-east from Lanark and 31 km from Peebles in the Scottish Borders. Quothquan is pronounced ‘Couth- Boan’ and means the beautiful hill. The village is named after a local hill, the Quothquan Law which stands 335m above the River Clyde topped by the remains of an iron-age hill-fort. A large stone which has been hollowed in the middle known as ‘Wallace’s Chair’ sits on the Law and is thought to be where William Wallace held his conferences prior to the Battle of Biggar.
