Pontypool in Torfaen (pop.35, 000) is located on the A4042 between Newport and Abergavenny. There is an ancient legend that the town derives its name after local parson Dafydd ap Howell, wrestled the Devil for the right to build a bridge across the Afon Lwyd. He won and it’s said the town is named after him – more prosaically it’s likely to derive from the Welsh for “place of the pool.†One of the oldest industrial and once prosperous towns in South Wales, Pontypool’s fortunes were inextricably linked to those of the Hanbury Family who settled here in the 16th century and initiated the once important iron industry.
