Lying alongside the River Anker and the Coventry Canal the village of Polesworth in Warwickshire is surrounded by history. Polesworth Abey was founded in the 9th century and today the remains of the cloister and the Abbey gateway remain. Later coal was discovered in the area and by the 17th century there was a well established coal mining industry here, with this industrial activity other industries were attracted and soon Polesworth was producing bricks and pottery, all adding to its economy because the Coventry Canal then allowed trade to be more widely undertaken.
