Piercebridge is a small village in northern England, situated in County Durham near Darlington, on the banks of the river Tees. During the Roman invasion in AD 260-270 on their march north building roads, towns and bridges, the Romans had to cross the Tees at this point so a bridge was built followed by a fort to defend the bridge and a settlement grew, becoming Piercebridge The Roman road Dere Street runs through Piercebridge from north to south, through a field known as the Tofts, east of the Piercebridge fort.
