Peterlee is a new town in County Durham, in north east England, founded in 1948 on the site of a deserted medieval village called Yoden. The town is named after Peter Lee, a prominent local miner born one of eight in July 1864 at Duff Heap Row, Fivehouses in Trimdon Grange, in eastern Durham. He was an important miner's leader and became the chairman of England's first all Labour council at Durham in 1909. Peterlee was amongst the first generation of New Towns. It was constructed for a target population of 60,000, with the aim of supporting a greater number of community amenities.
