Peacehaven sits atop the chalk cliffs overlooking the English Channel, 6 miles (10km) east of Brighton. Derided by Nikolaus Pevsner and other architectural critics as "a rash on the countryside"; "there is no worse in England" and "a little mans suburb". Yes! there are no lofty Victorian mansions, rows of Georgian Terraces or moated medieval manor houses. What these august gentlemen forget, or chose to forget, is that, it is of its time, at time of austerity. It was conceived by Charles Neville for, in the words of the time as having "homes fit for heroes" a place for those returning from the horrors of the Great War.
