The seaside village of Overstrand, a couple of miles east of Cromer, still retains the elegance of its golden years in the Edwardian era, when it was known as The Village of Millionaires. Overstrand shot to prominence through the writings of theatre critic and playwright Clement Scott, who christened the area Poppyland after a visit in 1883, when happenstance led him to stay with miller Alfred Jermy and his daughter Louie. Scott’s stories of this idyllic poppy-brightened corner of Norfolk caught the imagination of the metropolitan wealthy.
