Newington is a district in the City of Edinburgh the capital of Scotland; it is situated on a south facing slope 1 mile south of the city centre. Newington developed from 1805 when the important Edinburgh surgeon Dr Benjamin Bell built Newington House and bought the surrounding estates, following his death in 1806 the area developed with grand Georgian and Victorian townhouses, other notable residents include the infamous surgeon Dr Robert Knox (1791-1862) and photographer David Hill (1802-70).
