Fifteen miles northeast of Newcastle, on the Northumberland coast, lies Newbiggin-by-the-sea. The first recorded charter of the village dates back to 1204 when, on the eve of the Feast of Bartholomew, it was granted a market to be held weekly and an eight day fayre to start on the eve of the Feast. A home and fishing boat were linked to the monks of Newminster Abbery during the twelfth century and by the fourteenth century, Newbiggin had become an important maritime centre which was called upon for support by Edward II in 1336 in his campaign against the Scots.
