This picturesque market town, set by the River Weaver, has kept its mediaeval street pattern and a pedestrianised centre allows exploration of the winding streets and pathways. In Cheshire, the town is second only to Chester for its wealth of historic buildings. At the local museum there are artefacts from the area, many dating back to Roman times when it was a centre for salt production.
The focal point of the town is the Square which is the setting for St Mary's Church, known as the 'Cathedral of South Cheshire'.
