The north Cotswold town of Moreton-in-Marsh stands on the Fosse Way (now the A429) at the head of the Evenlode Valley. Given by Edward the Confessor to his new Abbey of Westminster in 1068, the village (as was) remained small until the 13th century when the Abbot of Westminster sought to exploit the commercial advantages of the Fosse Way. The new town was started in 1222 and granted the right of a weekly market in 1228. The town was closely connected with the wool industry and linen weaving and became an important staging point for travellers using the Fosse Way and the London to Worcester road (A44) that crossed it at the town; at one time there were 18 public houses and hotels in Moreton, including the White Hart Inn where King Charles 1 is reputed to have stopped at on his way to Evesham during the Civil War.
