The industrial heyday of Millom on the Duddon estuary was in the 19th century, when the discovery of iron ore near the town saw it develop from a sleepy market town once known as Holborn Hill to an industrial centre of maybe 10,000 residents. The mining and metallurgical industries continued into the second half of the next century at Millom. The town had been an agricultural and fishing centre, protected as it is by its position in the inlet between two peninsulas. Granted a market and Easter Fair charter by Henry III in 1251, the settlement also has Holy Trinity Church to the north of the town, a sandstone structure restored by the Victorians, and the ruins of Millom Castle.
