Melbourne is a large village with around 4000 inhabitants in South Derbyshire close to Derby city. It is mainly a residential area, famous for market gardens and shoe manufacturing. While only a handful of market gardeners survive today, in its heyday between the wars there were around 60 in business. The land around the village is now occupied with more conventional farming. The 12th Century Norman church of St Michael and St Mary is considered one of the finest examples in England and is built on the site of an earlier Anglo-Saxon building.
