Maybole is an ancient market town, once the historic capital of Carrick in South Ayrshire, Scotland, situated 9 miles south of Ayr and 5 miles east of the Firth of Clyde. Maybole received a charter in 1193 and was created a burgh of barony in 1516. Maybole contained the winter residences of many Carrick barons. The town sits amongst natural springs of mineral water including St Helens Well which was thought to contain water with healing powers, the citizens of Maybole were renowned for longevity, and the census in 1799 recorded a school-master who died at age of 104.
