Marley Hill is located five miles south west of Newcastle upon Tyne, in the north east of England, close to Gateshead. The north east was the main coal producing area of England in the eighteenth century and as the demand for coal increased the collieries had to be sunk further away from the river and wagonways built to carry the coal to the slaithes on the river for shipment. Due to the cost of such expansion, several landowner families often formed partnerships and this area, the Bowes, Wortley, Ord and Liddell families became known as the Great Allies.
