The little North Yorkshire village of Markington, roughly halfway between Ripon and Harrogate, sits a short distance to the west of the A61 road which connects those two towns. In spite of its size, the village has a choice of accommodation for the visitor, with the renowned Hob Green Hotel and Restaurant for those who want pampering, and the Yorkshire Hussar Inn Caravan Park for those who fancy fewer frills, though both may end up visiting the inn itself. Markington’s greatest claim-to-fame is the nearby Fountains Abbey, just a short distance to the north, a magnificent reminder of the power of the religious houses before Henry VIII broke them.
