Markinch is an ancient town in central Fife in Scotland situated 6 miles north of Kirkcaldy and 2 miles east of Glenrothes. There is evidence of a settlement in the area dating back to the Neolithic and Bronze Age periods with the Balbirnie Stone Circle and the Balfarg Henge. The small town is said to have been the capital of Fife during medieval times as the burgh of barony of Dalgynch one of the seven provinces of Pictland. During the 19th century the main industry was coal-mining, Markinch was also an important centre for linen manufacturing and paper-making using water from the nearby River Leven.
