Maldon is at the head of the Blackwater Estuary in Essex. It is one of the oldest towns in the area, most noted for the epic Battle of Maldon in 991AD when the Vikings defeated the Saxons. The English Heritage site of the battlefield area is part of the Coastal Protection Belt. Maldon grew as a town based on specialist trading, mainly for the London markets. The famous Maldon Crystal Sea Salt is made using crystals harvested along the beds of the River Blackwater. The High Street is the centre of commerce, with small lanes running off it.
