Loch Ness is the best known and the largest of the four Lochs in the Great Glen in the north-west Highlands of Scotland, situated south-west from the city of Inverness. Loch Ness is famous as the home of ‘Nessie’ the Loch Ness Monster, an elusive prehistoric lake monster. The first recorded sighting of the ‘water-beast’ was c565 by St Columba, although there were no other reported sightings until 1932, Loch Ness has been the subject of many documentaries and films. Loch Ness is noted for the volume of water it holds with some areas reaching 754ft in depth, it stretches 23 miles long and one mile wide with the village of Fort Augustus lying at the far south-west end.
