Llandrindod Wells did not really exist much before the 13th century although the Romans were aware of the beneficial effects of the local spring water and today just outside the town is Castell Collen, the remains of a Roman settlement. By the 13th century the houses scattered around benefited from the building of the Llanerch Inn and two churches, both of which are still in use today. One of the churches is to be found in a local beauty spot known as “Shaky Bridgeâ€, for obvious reasons, and which is also the entrance to Radnorshire Wildlife Trust’s woodland nature reserve at Bailey Einon, It was the coming of the railways in the Victorian era that saw Llandrindod Wells become more popular when it grew at a phenomenal rate as “taking the waters†was the fashionable thing to do.
