Littlehampton sits on the east bank of the River Arun, which up to the 13th century was known as the River Tarente. Known a Hamtun to the Saxons and in the Domesday Book (1086) as Hantone, by 1482 it was being called Lyttelhampton it is unclear why the `Little` was added. The port grew from humble beginnings and there was always a great rivalry between it and Arundel 4 miles up stream. In 1589 the estuary was described as being in a poor state but a lot of remedial work was carried out to improve access to the port.
