Little Venice, an entrancing area of waterways and brightly coloured houseboats in west London, was named by resident poet Robert Browning, who liked nothing better than to gaze out over the scenic views as he waited for inspiration. Browning was referring specifically to the place where the Regent's Canal connects with the Paddington arm of the Grand Union Canal to form a pool with an island in the centre (now known as Browning's Pool and Browning's Island). These days, Little Venice describes the larger district of south Maida Vale, one of London's most desirable residential areas.
