Lewes is steeped in history. Although surrounded by chalk cliffs, the Norman Castle of William de Warenne dominates the townscape, especially when illuminated at night. Its keep overlooks the barbican house and museum and a short walk leads to the handsome townhouse of Anne of Cleves, a gift to Henry VIII’s fourth wife as part of her divorce settlement. Many fine houses, timber framed and 'mathematically tiled' buildings line the streets allowing residents and visitors a glimpse into the true essence and variety of bygone Lewes.
