Leigh is located in Lancashire in the North West of England. Leigh did not benefit from green luscious meadows or great forests, in fact the quality of the soil was so poor that no crops were grown in the area. Leigh’s fortunes though lay elsewhere and it was early in the 19th century with the coming of the Industrial Revolution that saw Leigh grow into a vital commercial centre. In the space of just ten years, between 1851 and 1862 the population doubled in size as industrial manufacture and production took hold, transport links improved with the arrival of the canal network and railways and with it Leigh continued its growth.
