Leigh-on-Sea is situated west of Southend in Essex, 35 miles from London. Located next to the sea, Leigh has been primarily a fishing village since medieval times. It also had some success as a port, and The Mayflower is rumoured to have been built there. The Old Town, south of the railway, still operates fishing and cockling fleets and contains the famed "Cockle Sheds" with abundant amounts of fresh seafood for sale. Bell Wharf Beach is a small, sandy beach at the eastern end of Old Leigh. Along the High Street is the Old Smithy, rebuilt from two earlier cottages in 1860-1880, and now containing a "Heritage Centre".
