Lee-on-the-Solent lies 4 miles west of Portsmouth, the area was known as La Ligh in the 13th century and Lye in the C15th. It is not to be found in the Domesday Book, but was held by Count Alan of Brittany some time after the Conquest. The manor passed through several hands until 1540 when Sir Thomas Wriothesley was in dispute with a Walter Chandler, Walter complained to the Privy Council that Sit Thomas had taken the manor without paying for it. The Council heard the complaint and found it to be wholly unfounded and Chandler was ordered to make an apology and pay restitution (no surprise really, Sir Thomas was Henry VIII`s Chancellor!) The modern town of Lee-on-the-Solent sprang from the development of the area by Charles Robinson and his father John who between 1884 & 1894 established a holiday resort on the banks of the Solent.
