With a population of just 2,280 at the last census Kirkbymoorside seems more like a large village than a town, but it has a market place with a toll house, and a ruined castle still to be seen to the north of the place to mark it out from smaller settlements. Indeed, there have been two castles here in the townâ€™s history. Kirkbymoorside means place with a church by the moor, and is of Norse origin. The church in question is All Saints, a predominantly late medieval building but with remnants of earlier structures incorporated in it.
