With a population of just 2,280 at the last census Kirkbymoorside seems more like a large village than a town, but it has a market place with a toll house, and a ruined castle still to be seen to the north of the place to mark it out from smaller settlements. Indeed, there have been two castles here in the town’s history. Kirkbymoorside means place with a church by the moor, and is of Norse origin. The church in question is All Saints, a predominantly late medieval building but with remnants of earlier structures incorporated in it.
