The village was once known for the many coal mines and textile mills nearby which led to its growth and expansion over time, a walk around the village can still reveal some of the mill workers cottages which line the roads. Visitors to this semi rural location will uncover a link with the past with All Hallows church which dates back to 1190; it was built from local stone which has stood the test of time, the impressive tower rises for 78' and houses eight bells, and an attractive clock.
