Kingston upon Thames is an ancient market town with a beautiful riverside location on the outskirts of south-west London. Here, historic buildings and streets, age-old markets, guided tours and the local museum recall a past filled with colourful royal associations, while the vibrant bars, cafÃ©s, restaurants, clubs, theatres and art galleries offer a more contemporary appeal to the thousands of visitors and students attending Kingston University and Kingston College. The shopping is exceptional, with Eden Walk, Clarence Street and the Bentall Centre forming the major retail areas, although there are small, specialist shops at the recent Charter Quay development - a riverside piazza that includes attractive housing, a theatre, various eating and drinking venues, and a stretch of wetlands.
