Kettering is a Northamptonshire town situated on the banks of the River Ise, a tributary of the Nene. The town can trace the origins of its name back to an early Romano-British settlement to the north of the current town, as well as an Anglo-Saxon settlement to the east of the medieval village. The first documented reference to Kettering is in a charter from King Edwy in 956 AD granting 10 "cassati" of land to Aelfsige the Goldsmith. The main period of growth for the town was during Victorian times with the expansion of the Boot and Shoe industry.
