Keighley – as Cichhelai – is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086, when it was a tiny rural settlement (the very name meant Cyhha’s Farmstead). These days the town is reinventing itself, its heyday as a textile manufacturing town and centre for heavy engineering now the past. But there is plenty of material to work with for the future: the remaining Victorian architecture of the centre; the miles of waterside available along the Aire, the Leeds-Liverpool Canal and the Worth; and the lovely surrounding countryside including the sometimes brooding Rombald’s Moor – this is the edge of Bronte Country after all .
