Situated about five miles north of Yeovil, Ilchester lies at the junction where the A37 meets the A303. It is on the River Yeo and, up until the 19th century, was the county town of Somerset. The area seems to have had a Roman military fortification and flourishing town around the third and fourth centuries but a lack of fifth century Archaeological finds suggest that this went into a period of decline at around this time. However, there is also scant Archaeological evidence for the later Saxon settlements, for which a great deal of documentary evidence does survive.
