Hurst Green lies almost midway between Longridge and Clitheroe in Lancashire in the North of England in the heart of the Ribble Valley. Apart from this picturesque location Hurst Green is possibly more famous because of the nearby school Stonyhurst – a co-ed boarding and day school who possibly most famous pupil was JRR Tolkien. It is said that Tolkiens inspiration for Hobbiton, where Frodo and Bilbo lived came from the area surrounding Hurst Green. Stonyhurst College was founded in the 16th century and today is a thriving centre of educational excellence that can boast links to St Cuthbert of Lindisfarne.
