Hounslow, spread along both sides of the Great West Road in the outer area of west London, has for centuries prospered through its links to transport. In the Middle Ages, the village offered food, drink and a night's rest to people walking or riding on horseback between London and the West Country. With the stagecoach, Hounslow built numerous inns for the increasing numbers of travellers passing through. Today, its many hotels and guest houses serve passengers using the nearby Heathrow Airport - in turn, a big local employer.
