The village has been inhabited at least since the Domesday period when it warranted a mention as for its "one cottager and four small holders". Today the village forms part of the Longleat estate and is owned by the Marquess of Bath. Woodhouse Castle once stood on the parish boundary but the building was sacked in the Civil War and was never rebuilt. The remains can still be seen today on the road to Frome. The parish church, St John The Baptist, dates back to the 12th century although it has been rebuilt twice.
