Holystone is a tiny, stone-built village in Northumberland in north-east England. It lies on the edge of and just within, the area designated as the Northumberland National Park, on the north bank of the river Coquet. The main attraction is the Holy Well, or Lady’s Well, which was traditionally the site of early Christian baptisms and the source of Holystone’s water supply. The name is thought to refer to ‘Helistan’, recorded in 1242 and thought to refer to the presence of a natural stone or feature, which acquired a religious significance similar to the multicoloured or speckled stone of Falstone.
