Holyhead is located on the north eastern side of Holy Island on the shores of the Irish Sea near its junction with St George’s Channel and is separated from Anglesey by a narrow strait. Holyhead appears to have been used as a port by the Romans who traded a great deal with the Ireland during the time of Agricola. From an early stage in its history then Holyhead was a port and in 1848 the Holyhead railway was opened and this further contributed to the success of the town as goods could be exported and imported from the UK to Ireland and beyond through the port facilities.
