Sited seven miles from the sea, Holt has swapped its market for a bevy of antique and curio shops, restaurants and delicatessens. If Burnham is Chelsea-on-Sea, Holt serves as the Fulham of North Norfolk. The town is predominantly Georgian, thanks to the huge fire of May 1 1708 that wiped away a lot of the ancient buildings. It is mentioned in the Doomsday Book, and there has been a church on the site near the market place for over 900 years, although the current St Andrew the Apostle dates from the 14th century.
