As the setting for the long-running BBC series Last of the Summer Wine Holmfirth is already very well known to many, though the beauty and diversity of the area cannot really be understood without a visit. Situated in the Holme valley with the large town of Huddersfield a few miles north and the Peak District National Park close by to the south, Holmfirth has enormous attraction for visitors, even those who have not been enthralled by Compo and his mates over the years. In medieval times the settlement grew up around a crossing of the River Holme, with a corn mill sited nearby for ease of transport.
