Once known as Church Hulme today Holmes Chapel is a thriving town that grew in importance because of its geographic location, on the main route between London and Lancaster. The church in the town dates back to the 13th century and the village grew from here and the crossroads on which it is located. The cross roads and church actually form a square and this was home to many fairs and cattle markets throughout its history. By the mid 1700’s the village consisted of around 17 cottages but after a fire in the town just four buildings survived, the Church, the Red Lion and two cottages.
