Hexham is a lovely market town situated in stunning Northumbrian countryside towards the North Penines Hexham Abbey in the town dates from to the 7th century and other historic buildings include the Old Gaol, the oldest gaol in England which now houses the Border History Museum; and Moothall once the capital of the medieval County of Hexhamshire. In the 17th century Hexham was one of England's leading centres for leatherwork, especially leather gloves and the major employer but the industry here is now no moire Today it is home to a national hunt racecourse and a thriving market There are also a good range of shops in the town including a large number of antique shops.
