Though far smaller now than neighbouring Hull, which it abuts, Hessle (locally pronounced Hezzle) predates that city. The Angles called it Hoesellea, the Normans who displaced them Hase, the root of the name being Hazel. Situated on the north bank of the Humber, it is not surprising that the town has historic links to the sea. Shipbuilding was for centuries a major part of the local economy, but that ceased in the last quarter of the 20th century as Far Eastern and East European competitors undercut British yards.
