Herm Island is the smallest of the Channel Islands that allows public access. Cars are banned on the island just like on its neighbour Sark, but unlike Sark, bicycles are also banned on Herm Island. Neolithic chamber tombs have been found on the island, showing that it has been inhabited since prehistoric times. The earliest records of inhabitation date from the sixth century and show that a monastic colony settled on the island. It remained this way for some time until the land was annexed by the Duchy of Normandy in 933 AD.
