Holding 200 billion litres of water, Kielder Water is the largest man-made lake in England by capacity, surrounded by Kielder Forest, the largest man-made woodland in Europe. Originally planned in the 1960â€™s to satisfy an unexpected demand for water to support a booming industrial economy, by the time the reservoir was constructed and took two years to fill with water, it was not officially opened by the Queen until 1982. By that time, the decline of heavy industry combined with more water-efficient industrial processes and better water leakage control meant that itsâ€™ original purpose was questioned and many people criticised the government-funded project as a waste of money and resource, calling it a folly.
