Nearly eight miles west of Hexham in Northumberland, lies Haydon Bridge, on the A69 the main road built by the Romans from Newcastle to Carlisle. The town was settled in Saxon times, the name Haydon meaning enclosure. The town has an ecclesiastical parish of the same name. It’s church bearing a Roman font and altar was founded in the twelfth century and the building still survives although the present church, built in 1796, is dedicated to St Cuthbert. The bridge across the Tyne was an important crossing point, the current bridge was erected in 1773 replacing the previous one which was destroyed by flooding.
