Hassocks is a fairly modern village which only really started growing with the coming of the railways in 1841, but the name is older it is derived from the Old English `hessuc` = `clump of course grass`. Hassocks was the crossing point of two Roman roads, a north/south road and the east/west road from Midhurst to just north of Lewes. A Roman cemetery has been found near the crossroads close to the modern Stonepond crossroads were the A273 crosses the B2116; despite the presence of the cemetery and road junction no evidence of any settlement has yet been found.
