Hampstead, in north-west London, is more like a small country village than a metropolitan suburb. It has its own charm and atmosphere deriving from the narrow roads and lanes, delightful cottages, historic houses and a long tradition of art, music and literature. The roll call of world-renowned residents is too long to list, but painter John Constable is buried in Hampstead, and poet John Keats' Grade I-listed house and garden is open to the public, as is psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud's family home, now a museum.
