Sixteen miles west of Hexham in Northumberland, lies the small village of Haltwhistle, on the A69 from Newcastle to Carlisle. Lying within a large ecclesiastical parish of the same name, the area has been populated since Roman times and the village itself is mentioned in the Domesday book as Haut Whysile which means ‘high boundary’. The parish church Holy Cross has a 7th century water stoup, believed to have been used by St.Paulinus. William the Lion of Scotland apparently mentioned the church in a grant in 1178 to the Abbey of Arbroath.
