In west Northumberland, twenty miles west of Hexham on the A69, the Roman Newcastle-Carlisle road, lays a small village called Greenhead near Gilsland and Hadrian’s Wall. It has been an ecclesiastical parish since 1892 and its name is thought to refer to its location between Tipalt Burn and the river Irthing. During the medieval period several castles were built in surrounding villages of Thirlwell and Blenkinsopp as the area was subject to many border raids. The castle at Thirlwell is a ruin but that at Blenkinsopp was restored in 1880.
